Library Loot: 10.21.09

Boy did I have fun going to the library yesterday! More than half of my holds had arrived and I was as a giddy as a child on Christmas morning. Now, please do not think that I have any intention of reading all of these books within the three week loan period! I read much too slowly to harbor any of those expectations. I do, however, plan to skim all of them, read some of them, and decide if others are enough to my liking to check out at another time, or if I would just rather return to them unfinished.

Most of these books were recommended by you, my dear readers. A few of them I found while browsing the Kindle store (I downloaded the sample and enjoyed them enough to check out the book), and one or two were found while reading Bookmarks magazine on Monday night.

Here is the list of glorious literary finds:
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (audio book recommended by Sandy) - I have read the book numerous times but I am anxious to listen to Sissy Spacek's narration.
  • Amazing Gracie by Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff
  • Gourmet Rhapsody by Muriel Barbery
  • The Archivist by Martha Cooley
  • Confections of a Closet Master Baker by Gesine Bullock-Prado (Sandra Bullock's sister)
  • Living the Vida Lola by Misa Ramirez (I was contacted by the author to review her 2nd book, so I thought I should preview her debut book first)
  • Half Minute Horrors (reviewed by Lenore)
  • Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen (by Fay Weldon)
  • From Baghdad, with Love by Jay Kopelman
  • Get Real by Donald Westlake
  • Woman in Red by Eileen Goudge
  • Domestic Affairs by Eileen Goudge (I have not read any of her material and I couldn't decide which one I might enjoy most)
Have you read any of these books? Do you have any suggestions for which one I should start first? Which one(s) might be good Read-a-Thon material?

  1. I think you're going to love Sissy's narraction of TKAM! I can't wait to hear what you think. Library splurges are great, like a huge shopping spree for free!

  2. The only one of these that I have read is To Kill a Mockingbird (which I love). I am curious about the Sissy Spacek audio.

I am awaiting a copy of Gourmet Rhapsody from Amazon US (I prefer the covers!)

  3. It does seem to be the way with holds, that they all appear at once. Look like a great set of books.

I really must check my library catalogue to see if they have Gourmet Rhapsody in stock yet.

And I'll be curious to see wht you make of Aunt Fay's Letters.

  5. You're all ready for the read-a-thon! I had no idea the author of Confessions of a Closet Master Baker is Sandra Bullock's sister.

  6. I just "discovered" Eileen Goudge too and really, really liked her newest book, Once in a Blue Moon. I'm off to see if my library (really, my daughter's library) has any more of her books.

You seem to be having a super reading week starting with Bookmarks and now your stash from the library. All you need is a big block of time to read - ah-ha, bring on the read-a-thon.

  7. Yes, but are you going to be able to read all those before they're due back? That's always my problem when too many reservations turn up at once.

  8. Whoa, you have a lot of books. I saw Lenore's review of Half Minute Horrors. That looked good to me too, plus her review made me laugh.

  16. Love your library loot pick! :) I've heard good things about the audioversion of To Kill a Mockingbird, but I'm nervous to try it since I love the hardcopy so much! THe Archivist has a neat title. :)

  17. I just put in a few more holds at the library after checking out your list, Molly. I love your idea of skimming through all the books even if you don't read them - I think I'm going to start doing that, because I always have so many that I need to return unread. It's such a good idea!
