Bookishness: In case you missed it....

I have spent a leisurely Saturday morning sleeping in, drinking coffee, and catching up on blog reading.  One of my favorite weekly posts is Cathy's Weekly Link Round Up.  If you haven't had an opportunity to read this regular feature, you simply must check it out today.  My most favorite link that she provided this week was the world's largest outdoor bookcase:  30 bookcases filled with books for the visitors of Bondi Beach in Sydney Australia to enjoy.  OH MY --- if I lived near this beach, I would never leave!  You can read more about the event as well as view more spectacular photographs at the above link.

Another "just in case you missed it" --- last night I came home from school and turned on the television to catch the local news.  It wasn't quite 5:00pm yet and Oprah was just winding down her broadcast.  She highlighted this "flash mob" video of Ocoee Middle School.  If you love reading and want to be inspired....watch this video.  The "lead" dancer is the Principal of the school, and each student was asked to bring a copy of their favorite book to the taping session.

And, in true Oprah form.....at the end of the broadcast she (and Target) donated 2,000 books to the school's library.  AMAZING!!

  3. I always appreciate everyone who does a weekly links post since I'm too bone lazy to do it myself. But they always find such cool stuff, don't they? I would camp out on that beach forever too!

  4. One more reason to visit Bondi Beach someday--love those bookcases!

Especially love the video. A few years ago, a middle school principal in this area promised his kids that if they read a certain number of books, he would spend an hour up on the school's roof. Apparently, he enjoyed his day up there, and the kids got a pizza party to boot. Have to admire the creativity of those educators!

  5. My Scholastic rep sent me that video, because that is one of her schools. It is just on the East side of Orlando. Very cool!

  7. I cannot imagine all those books at the beach-I would be as red as a lobster, as I would just have to check out each book.

  8. Bondi Beach looks like paradise and that video made me get teary eyed too! Kids who don't read are missing so much.
I am jealous of your lazy Saturday. There won't be any of those for me this month as we have something major and all day consuming every Saturday in March, starting today!

  12. Swimming versus reading, the latter would win with me. Thankyou for your kind comment about Smokey -- she was the best!

  13. I love the bookcase on the beach and only wish it were right outside my door! The video of the middle school students is inspirational. Just to see so many young people with books in their hands (instead of cell phones or Ipods) is heartening!
