Sunday Salon: April 3, 2016

It's a new month... a new quarter... and for me, a new lease on life.

I am about 90% healed and cleared to do everything I would normally do. Now that the weather is warmer and the skies sunnier, I hope to return to a walking routine. I'm sure it will take a while to get back to my 5k-a-day, but I plan to start small and work my way up.

Reading:

April will be a big writing month (Blogging A-Z Challenge - Camp NaNoWriMo - 4 week journaling workshop) so reading will have to take a backseat for the next few weeks. However, I hope to continue reading a bit before bedtime, and listening to an audiobook in the car.

I'm about half way through Gone Girl. Still liking the story - sort of; still loving the narrators. Oh my... I never realized how entertaining a dramatic reading can be.

The one issue I have is the pace: it's slow. I know I could read the book much faster, and I get frustrated that I can't move the story along. However in chatting with another online blogger this week, she made a good point. Sometimes it is nice to be forced to slow down and savor the writing. She's right. And I do savor the author's fresh descriptions (although I wish the cussing were kept to a minimum).

I also managed to read another MG novel, The Painting that Wasn't There, the first in Steve Brezenoff's Field Trip Mysteries (I reviewed a later book in the series here.) I must say, I enjoyed this one better. The "strange" character names were explained in this first book and they make perfect sense.

The mystery is clever and while easily solved by this adult, I think young students would enjoy the red herring and the satisfying resolution.

I still think the series is geared towards reluctant middle grade readers, as the color illustrations tell as much of the story as the words.

Writing:

Last week I outlined the twelve chapters of the new novel, which I hope to draft this month during Camp NaNoWriMo. This week I focused on developing conflict within each chapter.

Interestingly, I did not have too much trouble coming up with a conflict idea. What I did find troubling was making sure they weren't too similar, and that each chapter was more suspenseful than the last. The goal is to "raise the stakes" as the story continues towards the climax.

I solicited the help of a few writing partners, and I think I have a good road map to follow. There is, of course, more details to flesh out, but I think it is time to start writing and see where it takes me.

Today I hope to draft the first chapter.

Blogging:

As I mentioned above, it will be a big blogging month...
I will spend most of this Sunday afternoon visiting other blogs, either from the Sunday Salon (where I hope to add a few books to the TBR list), Weekend Cooking (where I might find a recipe or two), or the A-Z Challenge (where I hope to learn something new about unfamiliar but fascinating topics).

Of course, tonight we will watch the season's opening game of our beloved Royals as they celebrate last year's World Series win. Should be an interesting game as they face the NY Mets again; both teams have a lot to prove.

What do you have planned?

  1. That's my issue with audiobooks: The pace is always slow and why I can't read audiobooks. Plus I don't have a commute to anywhere to watch. I did like the book, though, when I read it, though I know some book bloggers aren't/weren't thrilled with it.

Nothing planned today. We had snow and ice last night so not going anywhere, other than a neighbor's, to watch a NASCAR race with him. Oh, I'm reading Sunday Salon posts. Yeah, I'm doing that too. :)

    1. Snow and Ice?! I really hope we are done with that malarky in the Midwest.

Enjoy NASCAR... I know you'll enjoy the Salon posts :)

  2. So glad you are cleared for walking. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't get out and walk. Walking fills some sort of need in me that nothing else satisfies.

    1. I love walking - when I actually walk. The biggest hurdle for me is getting out the door. I have to give myself a pep talk every time. I hope to change that paradigm this year...

  3. I like your idea of an alphabet challenge. Will wait to see what "C" brings! You seem so organized. I never know what I'm going to read or write about.

    1. Well, I may be organized, but I'm concerned about the endurance factor :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. It's interesting to see your writing process. I kind of go with the flow, but have started to realize that doing a proper outline would be more helpful.

    1. I wish I were more of a "go-with-the-flow" writer, but alas, I spend so much time planning that it transitions into procrastination of the actual writing. *sigh...

  6. Congratulations on being cleared for activity... what a long ordeal you've been through, Molly! On the audible app, it is possible to adjust the speed of the narration. Sometimes the reader is a little too slow for me and I will increase it to 1.25x or 1.5x - if that doesn't distort the voice too much. Anything more than that takes the joy out of being read to, at least for me.

My mother and sister both sent photos of the snowstorm at home, so I'm planning to hang out here in FL a little longer ;-) Have a good week!

    1. I heard the east coast got snow today - I don't blame you for staying in Florida :)

At this point I have not purchased an audible account, although my husband has one and loves it. I may change my mind if I keep enjoying the experience.

  7. Nice to see that your getting mobile again! This will be my first summer since getting my knee back into shape and can't wait!

I look forward to your posts this month! I wish I could participate, but just not enough time to do it!

Looks like your progress on the writing is going well too! That's wonderful!

    Enjoy your week!

    1. Thanks so much :) The last 10% is slow-going, but I'm trying to learn patience through the process.

  9. Yay that you're cleared to do whatever you want! I enjoy the slower pace of audiobooks, but I have also been known to speed up to 1.5x when a book is dragging. But I listen to books when walking and cooking and gardening, so the slow pace is usually just fine. I'm reading when I otherwise couldn't.

    1. Right now I just listen to audiobooks when I'm in the car, but seeing how I don't drive that much, it takes a while to get through a book. I think I need to spread my wings and create other opportunities to listen throughout the week.

  10. I've never tried audio books, and I can understand the point of listening while you are doing other things, but I always find that it's the thing that my eyes are directed to which always takes my attention and concentration. I think I would constantly be having to go back and relisten because I would get distracted by that other thing I was doing :-)

That's an ambitious and impressive writing schedule you've given yourself for the month - I hope it goes well.

  11. I am so glad you are doing better. I imagine you will be happy to be able to get out walking again. Sounds like you have a busy April planned! I hope to spend more time reading in April than I was able to in March. It always seems as if there is never enough time. Have a great weekend, and thank you for visiting my blog!
